How I transformed this lounge with Bold Biophilic Design
Biophilic Design is about incorporating nature in the built environment in order to help our physical and mental wellbeing.
How does it work?
A bold biophilic lounge
The aim of Biophilic Design is to engage our senses in order to trigger hormonal and neurological responses. Seeing, hearing, smelling and feeling as we move around a space to trigger positive or negative responses that effect our basic levels of performance and contentment.
Some specific benefits include lowering blood pressure, lifting mood and improving memory as well as enhancing the quality of an individual’s life.
Last year, I had the pleasure of studying Bold Biophilic Design Nicla D Interiors, which blends the biophilic design principles with colour psychology to elevate your home’s energy.
Connecting to the surrounding views of nature
The lounge and its bold biophilic features
The brief for this lounge was to create a relaxing haven the family could enjoy in the evenings and weekends.
The Colour palette was inspired by the bold hues often found in nature. The rich greens and burnt oranges were were carried through in wall colour, playful tiles and all core furniture.
Natural materials were used through the wooden furniture, ceramic tiles and natural paint. All of these features provide warmth to the space and help it feel grounded.
The Natural light was maximised by removing the voiles. Not only has this helped the natural light to come flooding in, but the views to the abundance of nature outside can now be enjoyed throughout the day, connecting the space to natural rhythms, helping to reduce stress.
Floral patterns were introduced through the rug, artwork and soft furnishings, helping to connect the space to the garden. The wooden ceiling light is mesmerising. I see a complex leaf patterns, others have commented it reminds them of honeycomb.
Plants feature heavily throughout the room adding warmth and texture, whilst also stimulating a sense of touch and helping to create a more natural atmosphere.
BEFORE
From a cold white box the family didn’t enjoy spending time in, it has now become the most enjoyed room in the house. A space to fully relax and connect to the surrounding nature.
